TENINS COURTS COMPARED

Hard Courts vs Artificial Turf Courts For Tennis

The ITF Court Pace Classification helps determine the speed of a tennis court surface, categorized on a scale from 1 (slow) to 5 (fast).

This classification ensures that players can select a surface that matches their playing style.

Hard courts are typically rated medium to fast, while artificial turf courts tend to be slower, offering a cushioned surface for a more controlled pace.

Choosing the right pace rating ensures optimal playability and performance based on your needs.

At Coyote Sports Turf, we build tennis courts to suit any pace category, from slow to fast.

Benefits of Hard Tennis courts

Consistent Bounce & Fast Pace

Hard courts provide a fast, firm surface with reliable ball bounce, enabling quick reactions and precision. Ideal for competitive play, hard courts offer a consistent, predictable pace.

Durable & Low Maintenance

Hard courts are built to withstand heavy use and all weather conditions with minimal upkeep. Opting for post-tension concrete adds even greater durability, reducing the risk of cracks and a longer court life.

Weather-Resistant

Hard courts drain quickly and can be cleared of water faster than artificial turf, allowing play to resume shortly after rain. Blading off water ensures faster recovery for uninterrupted matches.

Benefits of Artificial Grass Tennis Courts

Softer Surface for Reduced Impact

Artificial turf provides a cushioned surface that reduces impact on joints, making it ideal for senior players and those prone to injuries. The softer feel allows for longer play sessions with less strain on the body.

Slower Game Pace

Artificial grass creates a slower-paced game, making it ideal for senior and junior players. The reduced ball speed makes it easier to get to the ball, and encourages extended rallies - perfect for players of all levels.

Natural Grass Aesthetic

Get the Wimbledon look without the ongoing maintenance. Players can enjoy the appearance of a grass court with the durability and ease of synthetic turf. Perfect for country clubs and high-end communities.

Tennis Court Construction FAQ's

Get answers to common questions about building, customizing, and maintaining your tennis court. If there's anything we haven't covered here, please give us a call!

A post-tension concrete tennis court uses reinforced cables within the concrete to create a more durable, crack-resistant surface.

The tensioned cables minimize shifting over time, ensuring a level and smooth playing surface for longer periods compared to traditional concrete courts.

Post-tension courts are ideal for high-performance play and offer long-term structural integrity with minimal maintenance.

Post-tension concrete courts are highly durable and crack-resistant. The tensioned cables reduce shifting over time, providing a smooth and consistent playing surface for years with minimal maintenance.

They typically last 2x longer than a concrete based court without post tension cables. They do however cost around 50% more to build than a hard court without post-tensioning the concrete.

Popular hard court surfaces include Plexipave, Decoturf, and Laykold. These have all been used on the ATP tour at varying facilities around the world.

These surfaces are widely used for their durability, consistent ball bounce, and weather resistance, making them ideal for both recreational and professional play.

Hard courts are low-maintenance, but regular cleaning, resurfacing every 4-8 years, and ensuring proper drainage are essential for maintaining their performance and durability.

Astroturf courts require minimal maintenance compared to natural grass.

Maintenance intervals will depend on use and weather. Some of the maintenance items are brushing to ensure even sand/infill distribution, removing debris, and inspecting for moss or weed growth.

Periodic sand/infill replenishment helps to keep your court playing like it was new. Regular inspections ensure the turf stays in top condition for consistent play.

You can adjust ball speed by choosing different textures and infill levels for artificial turf, or selecting specific coatings for hard courts that influence the court’s pace.
